Co-combustion of poultry wastes with natural gas in an advanced Swirling Fluidized Bed Combustor (SFBC) has been carried out to investigate the performance of poultry wastes combustion. Wastes burnt were poultry litter, poultry manure and sawdust. This paper presents the effect of three different wastes, excess air ratio, and secondary/total air ratio on the combustion characteristics. These characteristics include temperature distributions, carbon combustion efficiency, major gaseous pollutants emissions and heat recovery efficiency. The results indicate that, with the given moisture and ash contents in wastes, the excess air and the secondary air play important roles in achieving stable combustion. The carbon combustion efficiency could increase by 8-10% when the excess air is increased to 25% with the secondary air being at 20% and having a low injection height. However, the carbon combustion efficiency for the sawdust, which is 92% on average, is much higher than that of the poultry litter and manure, which is 81% and 76% on average, respectively. Differences regarding temperature distribution and pollutants emission were also observed with different combinations of the excess air, the secondary air and the secondary air injection height. The NO"x emission was very low even though the materials contain high levels of nitrogen. In addition, the heat recovery efficiency aiming at the commercial use of the SFBC system for the farm industries was also evaluated.

From the author: An ultraviolet (UV) photo-polymerization particle coating process was developed by coupling the photo-initiated cationic polymerization with the fluidized bed coating techniques. Unlike the conventional air-suspension coating in the fluidized bed, the new process employs a UV curable composition instead of a solvent/water-borne system as a coating material, which has a rapid curing rate and virtually no inhibition to oxygen and moisture. A modified fluidized bed coater equipped with a quartz window allows UV light to penetrate and to initiate the curing of photo-sensitive poly-merizable chemicals coated on the particles. A UV-cur-able liquid composed of cycloaliphatic epoxide, oxe-tane, and triarylsulfonium cationic photo-initiator was specifically formulated for the fluidized bed particle coating process. A systematic experimental approach including photo-Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and tackiness measurements has been developed to characterize the curing mechanism of the cationic UV curable formulations and to optimize the chemical compositions. The effects of the UV curable chemicals, viscosity of coating liquid, and the fluidization operating conditions on the physical properties of coated particles have been thoroughly investigated. Under optimized conditions, this novel process is very efficient as follows: particles can be coated very rapidly with ultra-thin films of the cured chemicals, with little, if any, formation of particulate agglomeration. From the author: Modeling of plasticization during injection molding has been a complex issue, particularly for the solid conveying zone. This can be further complicated by break-up of the solid-bed due to the reciprocation motion experienced in injection molding. The break-up of the solid-bed can introduce molding quality problems such as inhomogeneities in parts. A transparent barrel system has been set up for injection molding to observe the solid-bed break-up mechanism and the conditions that influence this process. This paper summarizes some solid-bed break-up results relevant to injection molding. These results may be useful to the modeling community for experimental verification of their simulations, and to the molding community for setting up molding conditions to prevent the occurrence of solid-bed break-up. The characteristics of biomass air-steam gasification in a fluidized bed are studied in this paper. A series of experiments have been performed to investigate the effects of reactor temperature, steam to biomass ratio (S/B), equivalence ratio (ER) and biomass particle size on gas composition, gas yield, steam decomposition, low heating value (LHV) and carbon conversion efficiency. Over the ranges of the experimental conditions used, the fuel gas yield varied between 1.43 and 2.57 Nm^3/kg biomass and the LHV of the fuel gas was between 6741 and 9143 kJ/Nm^3. The results showed that higher temperature contributed to more hydrogen production, but too high a temperature lowered gas heating value. The LHV of fuel gas decreased with ER. Compared with biomass air gasification, the introduction of steam improved gas quality. However, excessive steam would lower gasification temperature and so degrade fuel gas quality. It was also shown that a smaller particle was more favorable for higher gas LHV and yield.
